The Lady in the Blue Car

Update Jul6 6, 2020 — Top Drawer is now Story Boutique! We hope you enjoy this STORY about one of our wonderful donors.

Originally published May 30, 2018.

For the past eight years, a lady in a blue car has been donating to us at Top Drawer Resale Shop. She never shares her name or asks for a donation receipt. She’s always very sweet and never lets anyone help her carry in the donations, moving very quietly in and out of the back door. One day we noticed she had a dog in the front seat and asked if we could go out to see the pup. It was fun to spend time petting Cocoa while the donor continued to unload her trunk.

A few weeks later she was back, and we went out again to see Cocoa, softly chatting with her and stroking her soft fur. After unloading her donations, the lady in the blue car went out for one more thing. She brought in a box of Krispy Kreme donuts with a card and said it was from Cocoa. She quickly left and it was obvious she didn’t want to stay to see the card read.

Here is what she wrote:

“I wanted to say thank you for being so nice to me when I visited in the car with my new momma last time. She explained to me what you do and I thought it sounded like you were doing something special. I saved my allowance and want to donate it. Please use it how you feel it is best needed. I’m glad you’re here to help others (and if you haven’t figured it out…make dogs happy too.)

Be well, Cocoa (and the lady in the blue car)”

Tucked inside the card were five $20 bills.

We were so moved!

The whole interaction moved us to tears. After passing around the tissues, we were able to enjoy the donuts, compliments of Cocoa. The lady in the blue car affected everyone who has had the privilege of meeting her over the years. Each time she visits Top Drawer is truly a moment of grace.

She brings in a wide variety of new or gently used items, all wrapped with loving care. There have been new K-State sweatshirts, Beanie Babies, kitchen containers, whimsical yard art, several pieces of beautiful art work, new yoga towels, a couple of Steiff bears and much, much more.

Although nobody knows what has brought her to Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care or why she feels so connected, her boundaries are carefully respected and the volunteers know not to ask.  But her actions have had a profound effect on everyone connected with Top Drawer. From the staff at Kansas City Hospice, to the many volunteers around the city and at Top Drawer, to the people and companies who donate, and to all who shop at Top Drawer – each gives of themselves in so many ways and truly make a difference in the lives of the people of Kansas City.

Thanks to the lady in the blue car!

You’re a reminder that small actions may make a big difference, that caring about people may have a profound impact, and that giving back to the community enriches us all.
