Carousel Pediatric Care

Specialized care for the whole family

Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care is proud to offer Carousel Pediatric Care, the region’s only multidisciplinary team fully trained and dedicated to meeting the unique needs of children who are facing a serious illness, and their families.

Carousel Pediatric Care provides specialized care for fragile little ones pre-birth through young adults. The program’s primary goal is to support the family and their child, so they can live as well as possible and enjoy their time together.

When your child is seriously ill, everything changes. Your family doesn’t have to navigate it alone. Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care is here to help make this difficult time easier, so you can focus on what matters most.

Guidance and support when you need it most

Carousel offers a range of home health care services at any time following the diagnosis of a serious or life-limiting condition. Palliative care can be provided at any stage, including while receiving or seeking treatment to cure or slow disease progression. Hospice is a special type of palliative care provided when the focus shifts from cure to comfort.

The Carousel team is a group of highly-trained experts including pediatric physicians, nurses, CNAs, social workers, chaplains, and expressive therapists.

The Carousel team’s goals are to:

  • Maximize love and quality of life
  • Minimize pain, fear, and uncertainty
  • Keep family life as normal as possible
  • Help kids feel well enough to do the things they enjoy
  • Offer creative activities to enhance family life and connection
  • Be familiar faces in a sometimes overwhelming medical system
  • Support the whole family, including siblings, in the unique ways they need

Expert, compassionate care in the comfort of home

We get to know your family and child, and work with you to design a care plan that meets your individual needs and goals. We help you understand what to expect, your child’s medications, therapies and services, and help during care transitions and difficult periods of time.

Carousel provides:

  • Pediatric nurse visits to manage pain and other symptoms
  • Nurses on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for questions and visits
  • Counseling, emotional, and spiritual support to help your family cope
  • Trained volunteers who give companionship to your child or siblings, run errands, or give parents a break
  • Ways to help your child and siblings explore their feelings
  • Education on maximizing your child’s comfort at home
  • Assistance with school participation
  • Communication with your child’s physician and other healthcare providers
  • Monitoring of your child’s response to treatment
  • Assistance planning for future needs
  • Grief support for your entire family, especially siblings

Our goal is to help your child stay at home, where they are with family and things seem normal. If more care is needed than can be provided at home, however, Kansas City Hospice House™ offers children and families compassionate care in a welcoming, comfortable setting.

“I’m really glad we had them come when they did, because it was a night and day difference on the pain management alone, and on the way he was able to eat and just be a normal kid at home.”
