Turning grief into good at Patrick’s Bar

Turning Grief Into GoodIf you’ve never been to Patrick’s Bar & No Grill, you’re missing out! A true neighborhood hangout, Patrick’s is at 82nd & Wornall Road in Kansas City. Owner Pat Sanders has truly created a place “where everybody knows your name!”

Pat and his family came to know Kansas City Hospice in 2010, when we had the honor of caring for Pat’s brother, Craig, in his home. In 2015 we cared for Shirley Sanders, Pat’s mother.

Pat, his siblings and extended family turned their grief into good, and hatched the seemingly impossible plan of hosting a run at a bar! The Craig Sanders Memorial .1K Run came to life in 2012. That first run – an insanely fun trot around the bar’s parking lot – raised over $10,000 as family and friends came together to remember Craig and raise valuable funds to support the patients and families served by Kansas City Hospice.

“I started a fundraiser for Kansas City Hospice to honor my brother. It doesn’t come close to showing my family’s gratitude, but it helps our hearts to give something back to such a great organization. We were also fortunate to have the same great experience when my mom was served by Kansas City Hospice House,” shares Pat.

Fast forward to today – the Sanders family has raised more than $180,000 over the years from this run! The .1K Run now honors both Craig and Shirley, and Pat has incorporated a cookout, silent auction, food and beverage tents, and more into this amazing event which falls on a Sunday in August each year! Hundreds now gather to remember Craig and Shirley, have fun, and support deserving families.Patricks Bar and No Grill

Another fun aspect of this run is the t-shirt. Each year the .1K Run features a new shirt, and people have sent .1K t-shirt photos to the Sanders family from all over the world! Thank you to Pat and ALL of the Sanders family. While the event wasn’t possible in 2020, we hope to see you August 8 for the 2021 .1K Run!

The grueling race takes place in the parking lots at Patrick’s. You’ll make your way ALL the way around the parking lots. Extra points for not spilling your drink! There is a food station at the half-way point in case you need sustenance. And, you’ll receive your medal at the end of the race!
