Kansas City Hospice Solace House Center shares in a virtual Day of the Dead event

Kansas City, Mo., October 20, 2020 –This year has seen a pandemic limiting our ability to join together in remembrance. Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care and its Solace House Center for Grief and Healing are offering a unique way to remember loved ones with a virtual Day of the Dead event.

Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a day of commemoration – an opportunity for individuals to come together to honor, revere and celebrate the memory of their loved ones who have died.

This year we are pleased to invite the community to join us in a virtual Day of the Dead event from October 29 through November 2. Like and follow Solace House on Facebook where we will share resources, activities and information regarding this special holiday. You are also invited to light a candle and share photos and memories of your loved one on a virtual memorial site (Keeper link) we have created for this important event. We hope you can join us!

Day of the Dead celebrations developed in Mexico from rituals observed over 2,500 years ago and have evolved and grown to represent a variety of traditions and cultures across the globe. Sharing photos, memorabilia, favorite foods and beverages, marigolds and other flowers, painted skulls and other decorations, and lighted candles on alters or ofrendas are among the most commonly observed traditions. We hope this virtual Day of the Dead celebration will offer a way for families to share these rituals in this unusual pandemic year.

Kansas City Hospice Solace House Center for Grief and Healing guides families through a pivotal time following the death of a loved one, and helps children, teens and adults learn they can find hope after tragedy. Grief support services are available to all in the Kansas City community who have been impacted by the death of a loved one – whether anticipated or sudden and unexpected. Services include facilitated peer support groups, individual and family counseling, summer grief camp, and special community projects. Groups and counseling are still being offered in this unique year – virtually online or by telehealth.
