Each year the Missouri Hospice & Palliative Care Association takes nominations from across the state for the Heart of Hospice Awards. We nominated people and programs in several categories. This year, Gay Ranes received the Heart of Hospice Award for Administrative Volunteers. MHPCA cancelled the ceremony this year. However, we can now show you the video that Kansas City Hospice made to honor Gay and her years of volunteering.

Gay Ranes proudly serves as an administrative volunteer for Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care. She has been a hospice volunteer since 2016, and in her almost 4 years, has grown to be a vital member of the volunteer department team. Gay makes an important impact on our organization daily.
Gay is an administrative volunteer for the volunteer department itself. With 500 volunteers, it’s a very busy department. Gay volunteers out of our administrative offices every Monday. The other 6 days of the week she works from home. The list of tasks Gay handles is endless, but her main goals each week are
- Run reports and input over 60 home care volunteer reports into our EMR
- Correspond with all applicants interested in volunteering with our organization
- Track volunteer hours provided in the administrative offices
- Run reports and analyze data to ensure we’re meeting the Medicare 5% requirement for volunteers
A woman of boundless energy
In addition to her administrative volunteerism, Gay is an active member of the Darrel Bland Sertoma Club. It’s a club that crafts holiday gifts for patients quarterly. They also provide meals at the NorthCare Hospice House monthly and hold several 3rd-party fundraisers for our organization each year. They have even stepped up to construct parade floats for our annual St. Patrick’s Day parade entry. Gay has also presented several of our sewing needs to the group, and taught interested volunteers how to construct needed items.
Gay enjoys both her administrative and club work, and her passion for both is evident in all she does. She truly cares about the success of our organization and the volunteer department in particular. Much of the volunteer department’s success can be attributed to Gay’s innovation, smarts, perfectionism and just plain hard work.
