When Benjamin Franklin was quoted “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes” back in 1789, little did he know it would take another 200 years – and an act of congress – before the Patient Self-Determination Act would be passed.
The goal of National Healthcare Decisions Day, April 16th, is to ensure that everyone’s future healthcare choices are known and protected if a person is ever unable to tell their provider what they want. It exists to remind all people, regardless of age or health status, of the importance of making these decisions known. For healthcare providers, it is a condition of participation regulation. Join us to learn how to prepare, begin, document, educate, and communicate advance health care decisions.
Objectives:
Describe the value of advance care planning in your patient population.
Describe what the agent named in a durable power of attorney for healthcare document has the right to authorize.
The Kansas Board of Nursing approves Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care as a provider of continuing nursing education. This course is approved for 1 contact hour for RN/LPN relicensure by the Kansas State Board of Nursing Approved Provider #LT0118-0916 and the Missouri Department of Professional Registration State Committee for Social Work.
April 16 has been designated as National Healthcare Decisions Day! The National Healthcare Decisions Day Initiative is a collaborative effort of national, state and community organizations committed to ensuring that all adults with decision-making capacity in the United States have the information and opportunity to communicate and document their healthcare decisions. The objectives of NHDD are to provide much-needed information to the public, reduce the number of tragedies that occur when a person’s wishes are unknown, and improve the ability of healthcare facilities and providers to offer informed and thoughtful guidance about advance healthcare planning to their patients.
Partners in Primary Care and Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, along with over 1,000 other national, state and community organizations, are proud to participate in NHDD which will be celebrated on April 16. The theme for this year’s NHDD is “It always seems too early, until it’s too late.” It will be our goal to encourage all adults to complete their own advance directive so that we may be better equipped to answer questions and assist patients in completing their advance directive.
