Camp Carousel Begins

September 13 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Camp Carousel is a two-night weekend retreat for families with children who are dealing with the loss of a loved one. It begins on Friday evening and ends Sunday afternoon and offers fun, recreational activities and structured, creative opportunities to foster sharing and healing. The retreat features small group settings with trained professional staff and volunteers, with opportunities for families to spend quality time together. It is open to the community.

The beautiful setting and comfortable accommodations of Camp Carousel allow campers to express their feelings and experiences. Therapeutic activities include opportunities to share memories, learn about grief and learn how others have coped. Parents and guardians can learn more about communicating with and parenting children who are grieving and can deal with their own grief in adults-only sessions.

Helping Families Work Through Grief

One of the most challenging experiences a person can face is the death of a loved one who helped give life meaning, purpose, safety or stability. The death of a parent, child or grandparent touches the heart of family life.   When we and our loved ones are grieving, spending time with others who have experienced similar losses can bring comfort. That’s why, in 1995, Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care created Camp Carousel, a special weekend retreat for grieving families with school-aged children and teens.

Applications and More Information

There is no charge for families to attend Camp Carousel. Spaces are limited and early application is recommended. The camp experience is designed for families who are several months past their loss at the time of camp. Families will be notified of their acceptance to camp as space permits.
